The Future of lighting is sustainability: an interview with Maytoni CCO Timo Jahnen

At Maytoni, lighting and sustainability go hand-in-hand. We’ve recently written, for example, about the energy efficiency and recyclability benefits of LED lighting, the longevity of our product design (which minimises the need to consume replacement products and components), and the thriftiness of smart light.  

All these topics demonstrate our existing commitment to engage fully with sustainability challenges, but what is the plan for the future? How will we deliver a development strategy that will benefit both the market and the planet, whilst continuing to do what we do best – innovating distinctive, iconic, unmistakeably high-quality lighting solutions?

We spoke to our Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) Timo Jahnen, whose strong personal and professional values around sustainability, originality, and excellence reveal some exciting directions for our business moving forward.

Q. Timo, how does Maytoni’s commitment to sustainability and quality control connect with you personally?

A. Maytoni’s commitment to sustainability and quality control is deeply personal to me. It ensures that our products not only meet high standards but also contribute positively to the environment. This commitment inspires me to uphold these values in my daily work.

Our unique business model enables us to control the entire production process. This means we can guarantee that every product is crafted with care, reflecting our dedication to both quality and sustainability. This responsibility and attention to detail motivate me to continuously improve our offerings and maintain our standards.  

Q. Can you discuss any upcoming trends in lighting that you believe will shape the industry?

A. Key upcoming trends in the lighting industry include the rise of sustainable and eco-friendly materials, which prioritise the use of renewable resources and reduce environmental impact.

Additionally, integrated smart lighting solutions are becoming more prevalent, offering greater control and customisation through apps and voice assistants.  

Human Centric Lighting (HCL), which adjusts to natural circadian rhythms, is also gaining traction, promoting health and well-being, whilst also optimising how energy is consumed. These trends highlight a shift towards more sustainable, intelligent, and user-focused lighting solutions.

Q. As Maytoni continues to grow and expand internationally, what are your hopes and aspirations for the company’s future?

A. My hope is for Maytoni to become one of the trend-setters in the lighting industry, known for our innovative and high-quality products. I’m committed to expanding the business into new international markets while maintaining our commitment to excellence, sustainability, and customer satisfaction.

Q. Looking ahead, what exciting developments or new directions can we expect from Maytoni in the next few years, and what part of these plans excites you the most?

A. We plan to expand our eco-friendly product lines and enhance our smart lighting systems. Dedicated designs for core markets are also important developments but I am particularly excited about our focus on sustainable innovations, as it aligns with our mission to use resources carefully and achieve results that are measurably beneficial to the environment.  

Of course, what I won’t expect to change is our timeless design, which keeps our products relevant and attractive, so they don’t need frequent replacement.  

Q. What do you see as the biggest opportunity for growth in the lighting industry over the next five years, and how is Maytoni preparing for it?

A. The biggest opportunity lies in the expansion of smart lighting solutions and the increasing demand for sustainable products. Maytoni is preparing by investing in research and development to create advanced, eco-friendly lighting solutions that meet the needs of modern consumers and businesses. This strategic focus will help us capture growth opportunities and remain competitive in the industry.
